Luxurious, expensive rugs are fickle household décor items, which must be stored properly when not in use. Dangers like dirt, carpet beetles and moisture can ruin a beautiful rug over the course of a season and ruin a treasured family heirloom or expensive accessory. These tips can help you prevent harm from befalling your rug.

prepare your rug for storage

Keep your valuable rug in tip-top shape by following these tips before placing it in storage.

Dirt is a nefarious enemy of carpet fibers. It will need to be removed before your rug is stored. Lay your rug across a few strips of wire-mesh fencing on your driveway to avoid direct contact with the concrete or pavement. Vacuum the back of the rug with a beater bar attachment, then flip the rug over and repeat.

If it’s safe for your rug, wet it and mix gentle detergent in a bucket of water. Gently scrub the surface of your rug using a soft nylon brush and your detergent solution, then rinse with the hose.

You’ll want to thoroughly dry your rug to discourage mold and mildew from growing. Use a wet/dry vacuum to extract as much moisture as possible from the rug before leaving it outdoors to air dry. Try draping the rug over a patio table and chairs to allow air to circulate all around on a warm, clear day for about 10 hours.

Insects, particularly carpet beetles, lay their destructive larvae in high-quality, natural rug fibers. Before storing your rug, spray both sides with an insect repellant solution comprised of four parts water to one part vinegar. Allow it to dry for another few hours.

It is much better to store a rug rolled up rather than folded or even flat. To correctly roll your rug, start from the bottom. You can find the bottom by determining which direction goes with the grain. Make a tight roll from this spot with the good side out for less strain on the foundation.

After you’ve rolled your rug, wrap it in brown craft paper or house wrap. Never wrap in plastic as it does not allow moisture to escape. Paper allows for some air circulation, decreasing the likelihood that mildew or mold will develop in your rug’s rolls.
